How Are You Going To Be More Than Pink?
As you may already know, Komen has launched a Bold Goal to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50% within the next ten years. We know that people die of breast cancer for two reasons: a lack of high-quality breast cancer care accessible to everyone, and a lack of treatments for the most aggressive and deadly forms of this disease.
We will work to reduce the number of deaths by focusing on better treatments for aggressive and metastatic breast cancer; detecting breast cancer and recurrences earlier and working to overcome the socioeconomic, financial, geographic and cultural issues that are barriers to quality care for large numbers of women and men. Our goal draws on Komen’s 35 years of experience with breast cancer and the expertise of our Komen scientific advisors who are among the world’s leading scientists, clinical researchers and patient advocates. The goal we have set is achievable, measurable and based on scientific evidence.
Since Komen Central and South Jersey was founded in 2005, we have saved lives by funding more than 71,713 mammograms in Central and South Jersey and providing 259,495 individuals with breast cancer education. The other 25 percent of raised funds go towards national breast cancer research.
Each year, 7,000 New Jersey residents are diagnosed with breast cancer. The state has the third highest death rate from breast cancer in the United States with the eighth highest number of new cases. In 2015, 1,300 New Jersey residents died from the disease; our Bold Goal aims to save half those lives in the coming decade.
Let’s face it – we can’t achieve our Bold Gold alone. Our plans call for collaborations and we are committed to building on our role as a convener and collaborator and doing our part. And we need you to do your part. ACT by joining us at one of our upcoming breast cancer educational sessions or holding a DIY fundraiser. GET INVOLVED by volunteering your time and talent on a committee or at an event. Make an IMPACT by registering for our Race for the Cure on November 6 at Six Flags Great Adventure www.komencsnj.org. We are counting on you to be BOLD, FEARLESS and MORE THAN PINK! Together we’ve got this!!
