Letter from Sally Sheperdson, Executive Director of Komen CSNJ
What a difference a day makes. We have all experienced these wise words, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse. When it comes to breast cancer in Central and South Jersey, a lot happens in a day.
In 1 day there are:
10 new breast cancer diagnoses
4 late-stage new breast cancer diagnoses
2 deaths due to breast cancer
Behind these numbers are the women and men and their family and friends whose lives have changed forever. They are people in our community who will never forget that day. Who need our help.
With your funding support, this year the Central and South Jersey Komen Affiliate directed nearly $300,000 toward research funding to find a cure for breast cancer. These dollars are funding research into triple negative breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer, disparities in outcomes in the African American community, improved treatment options, clinical trials and much more. We fund the brightest minds and the best breast cancer research – research that has the potential to reduce breast cancer diagnoses and mortality.
Your dollars are also going back into your community through our Community Grants Program, which funds local nonprofits to provide breast cancer education and outreach, access to quality care through patient navigation and transportation assistance, and financial coverage for vital services such as mammograms, biopsies, and ultrasounds. People come to us for help at all different stages in their breast cancer journey and our goal is to ensure we can help with whatever their needs are. The programs we fund know very well the needs, gaps and resources in their communities and design their programs to address the areas where the statistics show the greatest need exists.
Days pass by so quickly. During the 31 days in March, many more women and men in Central and South Jersey will have heard the words, “you have breast cancer” and many lives will have been lost to this disease. We can’t stop time but we can join together to raise the funds necessary to slow the pace of breast cancer. Take action today.
Reach out to your friends, family and co-workers this month so that on April 1 when the Race for the Cure website goes live you are ready to register your Team.
Volunteer your time and talent to our Affiliate.
If you know of someone in need, have them call or email me so we can help.
Don’t let another day go by.
