Letter from Executive Director, Sally Sheperdson

Time flies, that I know. It seems like yesterday that I came onboard as the Executive Director of this wonderful Affiliate. And while my tenure as the Director at a Wisconsin Affiliate showed me that Susan G. Komen supporters are some of the most passionate people, my nearly eight months as your new Director has offered me the great pleasure of meeting people that bring a drive and an edge that accentuate their passion, and the impetus that this brings to our team is invaluable. As we move forward and continue to build upon our strong history and foundation, I look forward to meeting many more of you.

The spotlight was on our history in Central and South Jersey on May 14th. On that evening I had the distinct privilege to present the Spirit of Jane Rodney Individual Leadership Award to my predecessor Nancy Healey at our gala, PINK! a night to celebrate.  Having served this Affiliate for 21 years, Nancy left us with a legacy of leadership, passion and success. We also honored Dr. Robert Herbstman with the Corporate Leadership Award, who is not only a leader in the field of breast reconstruction, he is a highly valued longtime supporter of our Affiliate. The evening was vibrant and exciting and proved to be a wonderful success!

While my experience here has been chock full of activities and education about who we are as your Komen affiliate, the underlying theme remains a constant. The need in our service area is great, and our new 2015 Community Profile documents this. The Community Profile is a needs assessment relative to breast cancer, the disease, and all of the issues that encircle it within Central and South Jersey. The findings point to a lack of breast cancer education, access to resources, and barriers to treatment that is simply unacceptable. The Community Profile findings will be published later this summer. Until then, please take the time to learn more about our Community Need.

I hope, that like me, you will be inspired to use this information as a call to action to do more to change what are startling facts regarding the state of breast cancer in our community.  You can do this by participating in, and fundraising for, one of our upcoming events or by volunteering your time and talent. Together, we can raise the funds needed to support research that will find the cures and meet the needs to save lives.

Transition and change always offer challenges, but it is my promise to Nancy, to our Affiliate Board of Directors, to our staff team, and of course to you, that we will continue to share the same vision – a world without breast cancer.

I invite you to reach out to me to share your thoughts at, ssheperdson@komencsnj.org.

It is with, and through our community, that this passion we share will make the difference we all seek.

Warmly,

Sally
