Amendment Preserves Cancer Research Dollars

Susan G. Komen Affiliates recently advocated for the passing of a bipartisan amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2017.

Led by Senator Richard Durbin (D-III) and Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss), the proposed amendment removed two sections of the bill that would prohibit funding for medical research at the Department of Defense unless the research met narrowly defined criteria related to military relevance. This included funding for the DOD’s Breast Cancer Research Program. Our goal was to encourage Senators Cory Booker and Robert Menendez to vote for passage of this amendment.

On June 7th, we learned that our efforts were successful.

The Durbin Amendment was passed by an overwhelming majority, 66-32. In an official statement, Susan G. Komen praised Senate leaders for their swift action to preserve cancer research dollars.

Locally, Komen CSNJ continues to invest 25% of the funds we raise from our community supporters towards life-saving breast cancer research. In 2016, we awarded over $250,000 to research. Click here to learn more.
